DIFFICULTY FALLING OR STAYING ASLEEP: PSYCHIATRIC DIMS – PSYCHOSIS TREATMENT

The type of antidepressive medications known as tricyclics have proven very helpful in cases of depression; some forms of psychosis may respond to an antipyschotic drug. Sometimes a combination is needed in order to achieve success. Electroshock therapy may help some depressed patients. In virtually any case, however, psychological counseling is crucial if the patient is to understand and manage the disorder.
I must emphasize, as I have before, that treating the insomniac component of these disorders without taking the whole complex of symptoms into account is not only unproductive but possibly dangerous as well. Use of a sleeping pill to achieve sleep may make the patient feel more rested temporarily but does nothing to penetrate and manage the larger psychiatric disorder. Only when the physician addresses the underlying problem will the insomnia be conquered on any but a short-term basis.

KEEPING GYNAECOLOGICALLY FIT

•   Be proud of being a female – take responsibility for maintaining your health.
•   Be familiar with the rhythms of your body. Take note of, and monitor any irregular aches, pains, blood spotting, irregular or smelly vaginal discharges, pain on intercourse or heavier than normal bleeding. If any of the symptoms persist for longer than three (3) months, have a checkup with a reliable doctor.
•   Have a doctor you can trust and talk easily with. Make sure the doctor is experienced in gynecological health management. Write down questions to ask before your appointment – this makes better use of your time, and indicates to the doctor you are in control of your health.
•   Have regular Pap smears to reduce the chance of cervical cancer. Ask the doctor taking the test what her/his laboratory’s accuracy is.
•   Ask for an internal pelvic examination to check the health of the ovaries and possibility of fibroids or other irregularities.
•   Avoid a prolapse of the uterus by regular internal pelvic muscle contractions – ask your doctor how to do it.
•   If you have symptoms of vulva cancer, examine your vulva with a mirror on a monthly basis (when you do your breast check) to check for any changes.
•   If having sexual intercourse with multiple partners use ‘barrier’ protection such as a condom to stop the risk of infection from him/her.
•   Be informed about menopause and reliable ways of managing it. Ask your doctor about side effects of any treatment prescribed, and what research has been done into the treatment.
•   Female, feminine, fit and fabulous … at every stage of life!
